In a Google Hangout Office Hours, John Mueller answered a question about using title tags for product pages. That’s a good question because Google’s SEO starter guide doesn’t specifically address the use of title tags for product pages.

This is the question that was asked, which is actually a paraphrase of John Mueller:

“HTML semantics versus SEO optimization. The question sort of arises on ecommerce product pages … should the title of the products be tagged as a title? “

John Mueller replied:

“From our perspective, it’s entirely up to you.

From a purely technical point of view, it can happen that the product is a title on a page. I think that makes sense in a lot of cases because maybe you have your business type as a title, you have the product or product type it is as a title.

It makes perfect sense from a semantic point of view. So that’s kind of what I would focus on.

So less of trying to squeeze some sort of semantics into what works well for SEO, but more of trying to do what makes semantic HTML sense.

And generally this matches the research pretty well as well.

Google Developer Pages on Headers

Google has published an explanatory article in an SEO starter guide with some suggestions on the proper use of headings.

Google’s main argument is to use the title to describe what a block of content is.

In the case of the first title at the top of the page, the content block could be the entire web page, with subsequent titles describing the individual sections of that page.

Google advises:

“Use meaningful titles to indicate important topics and help create a hierarchical structure for your content, making it easier for users to navigate your document. “

Google also advises writing headers as if they were the outline of the web page.

Ideally, one should plan the topic of a web page and the different sections of the web page and create an outline of what needs to be discussed.

This outline can form the basis of what the titles of each section will be.

Google’s advice on titles:

“Like writing an outline for a large document, think about the main points and sub-points of the page content and decide where to use the title tags appropriately. “

To reduce all of this to how to use the title of a product page, it is perfectly normal to use the name of the product as the title.

For example, if someone is looking for an umbrella from a specific brand, it makes sense to use Acme Umbrella as their title.

There are also several ways to do this. For example if the title tag of the page is “Umbrella Acme“then the title could be”Umbrella Acme (assorted colors)“or you can just repeat what’s in the title tag, the choice is yours.

The goal, however, should be to accurately describe what is in the content section that the title describes.

The goal should never be to use the title to seed the keywords you want to rank for.
