The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Research and Development of Industry, Energy and Emerging Technologies (PCIEERD) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) signed a protocol agreement (MOA) to further stimulate the country’s maritime industry through science and technology. (S&T).
The partnership aims to bring forward “Science and Technology for Maritime Transport Applications (STMTA),” DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said in a report.
“STMTA is designed to ensure that the country’s shipping industry will thrive through S&T activities and innovations on alternative fuels and energy efficient water, transportation technologies, renewable energy, modernization of merchant fleets. and intelligent transport systems (ITS), ”he said. .
As part of the MOA, a maritime research and development (R&D) center should be set up under MARINA, noted the head of DOST.
“To achieve this, the DOST-PCIEERD will support projects, ensure monitoring and management support, and guidance. MARINA will also disburse additional funds to facilitate technology adoption, operational sustainability and formulate policies and guidelines to ensure the achievement of cooperation goals, ”said de la Peña.
He noted that MARINA plans to have 200 routes and 293 RORO (roll-on / roll-off) vessels by 2020.
Among the innovative projects of DOST-PCIEERD and MARINA under the STMTA are:
-Automatic Identification System (AIS) – transponder for boats or ships that automatically receive information broadcast by other ships and base stations equipped with AIS to avoid collisions, monitor and control ships in real time, search and save, investigate accidents and generate reports.
– Hybrid trimaran – prototype vessel with multiple engines and alternative renewable energy system using ocean wave energy.
-Sea Route Transportation Information System (MARIS) – modular software for efficient measurement of route capacity as part of MARINA’s modernization plan for the Philippine maritime industry.
-Navigational Traffic Information System (NAVIS) – software that allows the user to determine the correct number of vessels for a given route.
-Solar-assisted electric boat – the solar-assisted electric boat will be developed as a safe, efficient and durable rechargeable solar-assisted electric boat that could be used for island tourism and passenger transport.
-Evaluation of port capacity and route optimization – Data-based port capacity measurement system, which includes modules for estimating the berthing capacity of ports and software for planning ship movements.
DOST-PCIEERD is seeking to pay 975 million pesos to fully evolve the country’s maritime industry to meet global standards.
