After causing a sensation in 2018 with his first EP If you want it, which included the hits ABC and I do not care, Park Hye Jin continued to garner attention with live performances in which she took the mic to sing / rap to whatever she was mixing on the turntables. Hastily qualified as the new lo-fi house prodigy, the South Korean demonstrates on her debut album that her palette is actually much wider than that. Coming from his base in Los Angeles, we feel the relaxed spirit of Californian rap hovering over this record, which begins with a British garage atmosphere (but with a powerful kick) on Let’s sing, let’s dance. Park Hye Jin raps throughout the first half of the album, with moody choruses like on Good morning good night with its felted boom bap and its reverb guitar which serve to accentuate the sunny side of the song. In the same vein, note the hypnotic I need you Where Where have i been, as well as the artist’s knack for simple, catchy choruses with a nonchalant flow that comes and goes between the front and back of the soundstage.

Although there is a very rap flow in the record, house is never far away. You can hear small elements of it on songs such as Whatchu Doin later or Can I have your number (which should be remixed very soon); we hear it in the phrasing of the choirs, or in the effects on his voice. The second part of the record is more direct with 4/4 beats on Sex with me (DEFG), which follows the principle of its hit ABC with slightly bolder lyrics, and Where do you think, too short a lo-fi house model. Hey, hey, hey and Never Dies crank up the BPM and advance to techno, the latter enlivened by a looping piano chord and a voice that disperses like steam. It all ends in a scorching trap-style fusion on Sunday as soon as possible and I just want to be happy, a cottony track at will. Out of nowhere, Park Hye Jin has built a new bridge between hip-hop and electronic music; a Qobuzissime more than deserving. © Smaël Bouaici / Qobuz
